Reading FC Women have signed former England U-19 international defender Caitlin Smith from US university side Clemson Tigers.

Caitlin Smith’s footballing journey started at Southampton, where she began honing her skills from the age of 16. Her promising talent soon caught the eye of Chelsea, and at just 18, she made the move to one of England’s top clubs.

Smith decided to explore football across the Atlantic, attending Clemson University in the United States, where she pursued a degree in Sport Communication whilst also representing Clemson Tigers.

Smith told readingfc.co.uk: “Playing and studying in America has really helped me in my career, the main thing I noticed playing out there is the different styles of play. They take a more physical approach to the game, which, as a defender, is very important.”

“I am excited to play in a league where my technical abilities will be tested more. I hope I can develop my technical ability during my time at Reading.”
