It’s the final home match of the WSL season this Sunday for Yeovil Town as they take on unbeaten leaders Sunderland AFC Ladies.
Yeovil may have suffered defeat when they faced Sunderland earlier in the season but according to defender Rachael Edwards they have a ‘secret weapon’ this time round.
Goals from Abby Holmes and Keira Ramshaw gave the Lady Black Cats a 2-0 win back in June but Yeovil were without the services of Wales international Sarah Wiltshire that day.
Sunderland currently sit atop the FA Women’s Super League 2 table and are favourites to secure promotion to WSL 1.
But Yeovil themselves have had a successful league campaign – they currently sit fourth in the table – and Edwards is adamant that Wiltshire can make the difference on Sunday.
“If you told us at this stage of the season we’d be fourth I think we’d have bitten your hand off – fourth or above is our goal,” she said.
“It will be a tough game against Sunderland but hopefully we can get something from it. If we perform well I think we will get something from the game.
“We didn’t have Sarah [Wiltshire] when we played Sunderland before. There’s no doubt she’ll hassle their back four – she’s got such a great work ethic.
“She’s all about scoring goals but she just doesn’t stop running. She tracks back to the very last minute.
“She deserves all the goals she gets because she works so hard. She’s fitted into the team well and seems to be really enjoying her football. With people like her on the team I think we can really cause Sunderland problems.”
Sunderland have an eight-point cushion over second-placed Doncaster Rovers Belles in WSL 2, although they have played one more game than their title rivals.
But striker Beth Mead is taking nothing for granted and admits that there aren’t many tougher games than the Glovers.
“It’s going to be a big challenge,” she said. “Yeovil is a tough place to go but our season has gone really well so far and we’re fighting for promotion.
“Yeovil have signed a few new players, like Sarah Wiltshire, who are world class. It’s probably going to be the hardest out of our four remaining fixtures.
“One of our main goals for the rest of the season is to keep a clean sheet in every game we’ve got left. The league’s very close at the top so it could come down to the goal difference.”
The game on Sunday 21st September kicks off at 12.00pm at The Jones Stadium, Sherborne, DT9 5NS. Turnstiles open at 10.30am.
