On Saturday, the Northamptonshire Women and Girls Football League (NWAGFL) hosted the first of this year’s monthly festivals for girls aged 5-12.
This follows a run of successful tournaments that took place last year. We had a number of U-10 teams, and some players as young as 6 coming to play small sided matches at Parklands Community Centre.
The event ran from 12-4pm and we had 12 teams attend across the age groups. It was pleasing to see two new U-12 teams as well as 8 U-10 teams. Some girls were playing in their first ever matches for their clubs.
The aim of the tournaments is for teams, or even individuals or small groups of girls, to come along and play football in a safe, fun environment. More and more queries are coming in for ‘girls only football’ for those as young as 5 years old but only a handful of clubs provide girls only football at mini soccer ages (U-7 to U-10) in the county. Girls who play in mixed teams are welcome to come along. Everyone had the opportunity to play everyone and we are really grateful to the older girls from Corby Gems who stayed to help referee on the day.
The next tournament will take place in Corby in December (date TBC). If you would like to enter a player, a group of players or even a team (U-10s and under – 5 a side, U-12s – 7 a side) please contact Dave Hughes from the NWAGFL on 07934 303328 to register interest or get sent an application form.
