Nike will provide WSL players with free boots after extending sponsorship

Nike has agreed to extend its deal with the WSL for the next five years

Nike has confirmed that they have agreed to a groundbreaking deal with the WSL that will include free equipment for the top players in England.

WSL and WL2 players had previously been forced to buy their own boots and equipment.

Nike extends WSL sponsorship

Over 250 players from England’s top two leagues have reportedly signed deals with Nike to receive football boots or goalkeeper gloves for free going forward this season.

The deal will exclude any players who have existing contracts with rival companies. Both Tottenham and Chelsea women already have long-standing deals with Nike.

Clubs in women’s football do not provide players with the required equipment for matchdays so the deal will come as a relief to players who have agreed to the deal.

The PFA did provide WSL clubs with a £300 boots voucher in the past, however this wasn’t nearly enough for the country’s best players.

Nike will also provide balls for games in the WSL, WSL2 and the League Cup in what is a new five-year deal.

The popular brand has already played a huge role in women’s football over the past three years, with the deal first launching in 2022.

Despite the obvious growth in women’s football, the lack of first-team sponsorships has been a stark reminder of just how far the game still is behind men’s football in England.

With England winning back-to-back European Championships this summer the game is finally getting more recognition from major brands.

Both the WSL and WSL2 have also introduced minimum salaries for players in England’s top two divisions this week.

The minimum salary is yet to be confirmed but it shows yet more growth and respect for the women’s game.

Currently, the average salary for WSL players is reported to be around £50,000.

The top two divisions in England kick off this season on Friday night, with WSL champions Chelsea hosting Manchester City in the season opener.
