Owens will be ably assisted by Jake Mullinder, whilst Shrewsbury Town in the Community’s Women’s and Girls’ Officer, Pete Wilson, will act as technical director.
A UEFA B Licence Coach, Owens has previously worked with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FAWPL and he is looking forward to leading the Shrews.
“I’m absolutely delighted”, admitted Owens to shrewsburytown.com.
“I’ve been with the club for the last two seasons and you can see the foundations that have been built and now it’s time to take those forward.
“Sean (Evans) did a fantastic job. Over four seasons he has done so well and that was the foundation he built. Now it’s time to really push it on and take the girls to the next level.”
Shrewsbury Town in the Community have recently improved their player pathway for girls’ football and Alex believes his past experiences will help bring young players through into the Ladies first-team.
“I started off in the Ladies game with Wolves and I really enjoyed it there”, said Owens.
“They were in the Women’s Premier League and I was working with the Reserve team squad and the First-Team squad at the time.
“You got to see the young players go into the first team and that is what is going to link in really well with the RTC (Regional Talent Club).
“Some of the RTC players from last season are now coming up into the Ladies and it will be great to see how they move up and it will be really good for me to work with those players.”
Shrewsbury were only reformed in 2013 but Owens has high hopes of reaching the Premier League Regional Divisions within the next three seasons – they finished fifth in the West Midlands Division 1 North in 2016-17..
“The aim of this season is to get promotion straight away”, said Owens.
We are going to get a very strong squad together to work twice a week. We want a clear philosophy this year and we want all the players to buy into it and at the end of the season we want promotion to be achieved.”
