The Netherlands edged Germany 2-1 to win the mini-tournament held for the three joint bidders to host the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Dutch and Germans had both beaten Belgium, before the Netherlands came out on top in Wednesday’s final match.

Jill Roord had hit the bar for the hosts in Venlo, before Jackie Groenen gave the hosts a 16th-minute lead from a Vivianne Miedema pass.

Laura Freilang levelled just before the break from a cross by Svenja Huth, but Danielle van de Donk restored the lead around the hour mark, heading home after Merle Frohms had turned an effort from Roord onto the bar.

Germany had chances to equalise, including a couple for Klara Bühl, but they were to suffer a first defeat against the Netherlands since 2000.
