The contract of Spain head coach Montse Tome is set to expire at the end of August, just one month after their Euro 2025 final defeat to England.
Montse and Spain were favourites to win the competition in Switzerland after cruising through to the final.
However, they were denied by England in a penalty shootout, as the Lionesses successfully defended the trophy they won at Euro 2022.
This was revenge for Sarina Wiegman’s side after England lost to Spain in the 2023 World Cup final.
Spain will look to recover strongly from their disappointment in Switzerland. However, there is no certainty on who their manager will be leading up to the 2027 World Cup and Euro 2029.
That is despite betting sites already making Spain as favourites to win Euro 2029 in four year’s time.
Why has a new Spain contract for Montse Tome not yet been confirmed?
Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo report that a new contract for Montse Tome is the ‘most pressing matter’ for the women’s team.
It’s added that Tome also wants to extend her stay as manager of the women’s Spanish national team.
However, there has been no confirmation from Spain, which marks as a surprise given her contract expires on August 31st.
Ahead of Euro 2025, the Spanish Football Federation pledged Tome would stay if they had a ‘strong showing at the Euros’.
Spain, despite their loss to England and being pre-tournament favourites, still had a strong Euros – coming closer to winning the tournament than ever before.

There was a good feeling within the Spanish national camp throughout Euro 2025.
However, she has not pleased everyone, making tough decisions such as dropping Jenni Hermoso for the tournament.
Hermoso hit out at the Spain manager, appearing to reference comments from Tome about having a ‘clear conscience’ regarding Hermoso’s omission.
Hermoso tweeted: “I really also have a very clear conscience and even more so when I remove environments with such bad energy from my life.
“Manage? That’s what others should learn to do, that part is too big for them.”
Montse Tome’s coaching career
The Spain job is the first managerial position of Montse Tome’s coaching career.
She was appointed as Spain manager following their 2023 World Cup triumph, replacing Jorge Vilda.
It is uncertain what Tome’s next step would be if she leaves, but it could be a change to club management if she wishes to continue as a head coach.
During her playing career, she represented Spain four times, also playing for the likes of Barcelona, Levante and Oviedo.
