Millie Bright and Erin Cuthbert scored second-half goals as Chelsea beat Manchester City 2-0 in the FA Women’s Community Shield at Wembley Stadium.

Chloe Kelly went closest to opening the scoring in the firs half, hitting the post after Ann-Katrin-Berger saved well from Georgia Stanway for a second time.

Janine Beckie did have the ball in the net though, having replaced Lauren Hemp who pulled up with an injury, the Canadian tapped home from an offiside position after Kelly had evaded four Chelsea players.

Chelsea’s Sam Kerr had found the side-netting just three minutes in and was off-target on a couple of other occasions.

Melanie Leupolz forced a crucial block from Ellie Roebuck, Gemma Bonner’s outstretched boot then denying Maren Mjelde.

After the break, Kerr again fluffed chances with Stanway following suit in-between but Man City were down to ten when Jill Scott received a second caution for a foul on Ji So-yun.

It was left to centre-back Bright to net when thumping home a strike from outside the box to give Chelsea the lead.
