One of Australia’s youngest stars has made her highly anticipated move in January, but it wasn’t to a WSL club like everyone was hoping for.
Amy Sayer decided against a move to England and instead joined Swedish side Malmo.
Who is Amy Sayer?
Although she is just 24-years-old, Amy Sayer is already a very highly rated youngster.
The Australian star has been playing in Sweden for two years now. Sayer worked her way through university in America before turning professional with Kristianstads in 2023.
Last year saw a huge interruption in Sayer’s career as she tore her ACL which sidelined Sayer for over a year.
When she returned to action in 2024, the highly rated midfielder played 34 games for Kristianstads before her contract expired.
Although there were WSL clubs monitoring her situation, Sayer decided to remain in Sweden by joining Malmo.
“It feels really exciting to be here,” she said on arrival this week. “Malmö FF is a big club with high ambitions. I already thought last year that MFF would offer tough competition and be a top team. That was also something they showed.

“When I heard that there was interest in me, I felt that I would fit in well here. I am a competitive person who wants to win everything I do.
“I’ve been in Sweden for three years and the big dream is to win the league. That’s all both I and the club are working for. I’m here to win.”
The Matildas star will now join up with international teammate Courtney Nevin at Malmo. Nevin joined the Swedish club in August last year on a three year deal.
Which WSL clubs could have signed Sayer?
There were plenty of WSL clubs who were vying for Sayer’s signature in January.
With Liverpool struggling so much in the league this season, they are in desperate need of reinforcements.
The Reds could use a new face in midfield and they have been linked with plenty of different names in Europe, including Sayer.
There were also big clubs reporting interest in Sayer who could have been a great squad player in England’s top flight. Tottenham have been very busy in the transfer market already with five signings, but Sayer was not one of the lucky stars to earn a move to the WSL.
Although she didn’t move to England this year, there could definitely be a future for Sayer in the WSL with her career still blossoming.
