Manchester United’s Leigh Sports Village stadium gets renamed

Leigh Sports Village
Leigh Sports Village has been the home of Manchester United women since 2018

Leigh Sports Village, the home stadium for Manchester United Women, has been renamed.

The ground, which is also home to the Leigh Leopards rugby league team, will see the name change come into immediate effect.

Manchester United play the majority of their home games at the ground based in Leigh, Greater Manchester, with a select few games played at Old Trafford.

What is the new name of Manchester United Women’s stadium?

Leigh Sports Village stadium will now be known as the Progress With Unity Stadium.

It comes after councillors voted to approve the change at a full council meeting.

Council leader David Molyneux said as per the Manchester Evening News: “It’s important to note that Progress With Unity isn’t just our initiative, it has partnership working and the strength of our communities at its heart.

“In many ways, Leigh Sports Village encapsulates this approach; it is a complex of facilities to be proud of, hosting professional and grassroots organisations and delivering community-based services.

“We believe the new name for the stadium is therefore an appropriate step to promote what we are trying to achieve here in our borough and be a figurehead for our shared values.”

The initiative reflects the borough’s commitment to community engagement and collaboration. The stadium already hosts a variety of professional and grassroots organisations, making it a central hub for local sport and culture.

When did Manchester United start playing at Leigh Sports Village?

Manchester United Women started playing at the Leigh Sports Village stadium, now known as the Progress With Unity stadium, in 2018.

The 12,000 capacity stadium opened in 2008 and has grown into a major sporting hub. It regularly stages international rugby league matches and was one of the venues for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 football tournament.

The wider complex also includes the Leigh campus of Wigan and Leigh College, Leigh Leisure Centre and the Leigh Sports Hub.

It is home to Leigh East RLFC and the Leigh Harriers Athletics Facility. In 2023, Wigan Council opened the £2 million Leigh Youth Hub next to the stadium, strengthening the area’s role as a centre for sport and community development.

The name change also affects the Leigh Leopards rugby league team, whose owner Derek Beaumont said: The Progress With Unity Stadium is a great facility that we are proud to call our home.”

Will Manchester United Women Play at Old Trafford This Season?

Manchester United Women play most of their home matches at the newly renamed stadium, but some fixtures will take place at Old Trafford.

In November, United will play their first-ever Women’s Champions League match at Old Trafford against Paris Saint-Germain.

The club said it wants the team to play in front of the biggest crowds possible at its main ground.

United has also scheduled two Women’s Super League fixtures at Old Trafford this season. United will host Aston Villa on November 8 and Manchester City on March 29 2026. These follow a pattern set last season when the club played Manchester City and West Ham at Old Trafford, with a proposed third match against Crystal Palace eventually moved back to Leigh Sports Village.
