Manchester City went top of the Barclays Women’s Super League with a 2-1 victory over Everton on Saturday lunchtime.
Everton’s Justine Vanhaevermaet blocked a goal-bound shot from Kerstin Casparij, shortly before gifting possession to Khadija Shaw in the penalty area, who took full advantage when finishing past Courtney Brosnan.
Manchester City offered their visitors an opportunity to level before the break when Khiara Keating’s pass was intercepted by Rikke Madsen, whose hurried attempt just went back to the keeper.
Ten minutes after the restart was lead was doubled, Lauren Hemp running from just over the halfway line to curl a 25-yard shot inside the far post.

The response was quick from Everton and every bit as good. Hanna Bennison turned outside the box and fired into the top corner.

Brosnan did well to tip a Laura Coombs strike over the bar but the hosts took all three points to knock Chelsea off the top of the league.
