Manchester City went top of the Barclays Women’s Super League for the first time this season as they beat Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park.
Goals from Vivianne Miedema and Bunny Shaw got the job done, despite Kelly Gago getting one back for the hosts.
“Bunny Shaw has got that clutch goal for Manchester City,” said BBC TV co-commentator Rachel Brown-Finnis, who named her player of the match.
“To be fair it was a very difficult game,” Shaw said after the match to the BBC. “Everton made it very difficult and we didn’t help ourselves – seems like that’s how we’ve been going all season.
“The difference is we just tried to get the job done, at the end of the day the three points is all that matters, and I think we ground out that win. Definitely happy.”
Bunny Shaw: We focus on ourselves
Asked about the importance of moving to the top of the table, Shaw added: “It’s massive. We always say we just focus on ourselves because at the end of the day we have to focus on what we can control, which is our performances on the pitch. That’s what we’ve been doing. To be in and around the top of the table is a good feeling.”
Shaw revealed that missing out on a UEFA Women’s Champions League spot last season had triggered a lot of honest conversations among the squad before the start of this campaign.
“This season, we just need the three points,” she said. “Last season we fell short in a couple of games but this season, the mentality is the biggest thing.”
Manchester City leapfrog Chelsea, who could only draw with Arsenal on Saturday, albeit preserving their unbeaten record so far this season.
The game was also notable for the return of Lauren Hemp after some weeks out with an ankle injury.
It would no doubt have been a very welcome sight for manager Andree Jeglertz ahead of next weekend’s Manchester derby, at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, 15th November.
