Manchester City star Bunny Shaw has revealed how Luis Suarez influenced her career as she transitioned into becoming a No.9.
Bunny Shaw highlights influence of Luis Suarez
Shaw has become one of the most feared forwards in the Women’s Super League and her rise was helped by carefully studying a player she admired growing up.
When she shifted into the role of a striker, she paid close attention to former Liverpool and Barcelona men’s star Suarez, who currently plays for Inter Miami at the age of 38.
Manchester City handed Shaw the No.9 jersey before the start of the season.
Speaking to WSL Football about choosing the shirt number, she said: “Having this number, I think it represents me a little bit more.
“Especially as when I was growing up, I used to watch a lot of Luis Suarez, particularly when I transitioned to a number nine.
Shaw knew early on that she wanted to understand the role completely, and she found inspiration in players who attacked every moment with conviction.
Her love for the sport started in Jamaica and her curiosity pushed her to become part of it.
“Growing up in Jamaica, there was a lot of football kicking around, and I was always very curious to know more about the game. From there, I got involved a bit more, and have loved it ever since and that has been my motto ever since.”

Suarez won multiple Golden Boots across Europe during his career, something which Shaw has been able to do in the WSL.
Shaw is looking to make history with a third consecutive WSL Golden Boot this season.
She added another two goals to her tally in her most recent outing against Leicester City. This keeps her at the front of the Golden Boot race with eight goals in 10 games.
With almost half the season played, she is producing close to a goal per game and remains central to Manchester City’s push for silverware.
Shaw is clear about what drives her. “I want to be the best I can be and when I look back I want to be able to say confidently that I gave everything and there was nothing left for me to give. It is good to know that all the work is recognised by my peers.”
She added: “The trophies are going to be on the shelves but the impact I was able to make as a player will mean so much more to me than the trophies.”
