Lyon Win Champions League On Penalties

Thursday May 26th
UEFA WOMEN’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL
VfL Wolfsburg 1-1 Olympique Lyonnais (aet, Lyon won 4-3 on pens)
(Att: 15,117)

Watched by over 15,000 at Reggio Emilia in Italy, Lyon took a 12th-minute lead when Pauline Bremer went on a run that ended with a ball across for Ada Hegerberg to turn in.

Wendie Renard was denied an equaliser against her former side by a goal-line clearance from Élise Bussaglia.

Louisa Necib’s strike from distance was close to creeping in and making the game safe for Lyon, only for Alex Popp to head in Isabel Kerschowski’s cross on 88 minutes as Sarah Bouhhadi missed her punch.

After extra-time brought no addition to the score, Almuth Schult saved Hegerberg’s penalty but Bouhaddi redeemed herself by keeping out both Nilla Fischer and Bussaglia, with Saki Kumagai then converting the decisive kick.

Next year the Champions League final comes to the UK, with the final to be played at Cardiff City FC.
