London City Lionesses have signed Venezuelan international midfielder Sonia O’Neill on a one-year deal from Turbine Potsdam.

Toronto-born O’Neill played twice for Venezuela at the 2022 Copa America Femenina and has experienced club football in Germany, Italy, Croatia and Scotland.

O’Neill told londoncitylionesses.com: “I have family and friends in London, which made this opportunity stand out. I know players who have played here in the past and they have nothing but good things to say about the club.

“I know that the goal for this season is clear, we want to get promoted. I’ve been playing away from home for twelve years now and I reached a point where I wanted to play at a high level in a country where I’m familiar with the language.

Assistant Coach Nicola Williams commented: “Sonia brings an impressive amount of international experience, which is exactly what we’re trying to bring to the club. She will help to raise the level of the squad and the players around her.

“Sonia is an aggressive midfielder, who looks to get on the ball and links really well with the other players in her rotations. She is a box-to-box presence who we expect will help us at both ends of the field.”
