Liverpool are edging closer to signing Freiburg goalkeeper Rafaela Borggräfe, with personal terms and a transfer fee already agreed.
Borggräfe has played for Freiburg almost all of her life, with the 25-year-old coming through the club’s academy system before graduating to the first team in 2017.
The German star eventually became Freiburg’s number one in 2021 after a loan spell with FC Aarau, with her hard work and patience at the club finally appreciated.
After finally breaking into the first team Borggräfe was hit with an unfortunate illness and the goalkeeper was ruled out for almost the entirety of 2023.
However when she made her return to the pitch, the Freiburg goalkeeper was reinstated as the team’s number one almost immediately, playing 14 games in the 2023/24 season and reasserting herself as a top goalkeeper in the Frauen-Bundesliga.
In 2024-25 Borggräfe enjoyed her best professional season to date, keeping seven clean sheets across 19 league appearances as Freiburg finished fifth – their best finish since 2018.
Will Rafaela Borggräfe start for Liverpool?
While Borggräfe has enjoyed an upward curve in her performances over the past two years, it is unlikely that Liverpool are signing the German to be their starting goalkeeper in the WSL.

The Reds already have Rachel Laws and Faye Kirby who play in goal. Laws was Liverpool’s number one for the majority of last season, starting 15 games in the WSL.
With just one clean sheet for Laws last year there is certainly room for improvement and Borggräfe could push for the starting spot should she take her chance when it comes.
Tegan Micah departed Liverpool this summer and so the remaining two goalkeepers with the addition of Borggräfe will most likely be the trio used by the Reds for next season.
What did Rafaela Borggräfe say after leaving Freiburg?
Following her departure from Freiburg, Borggräfe said: “SC Freiburg has been my home, my daily life, my heart for over a decade. I came here as a young girl and was given the chance to grow step by step – both as a player and as a person.
“I’ve grown alongside the club, experienced highs and lows, and most importantly, met many special people who’ve shaped my journey. SC gave me the opportunity to live out my dream of becoming a professional footballer, and for that I’m endlessly grateful.
“Leaving the club wasn’t an easy decision, but I feel that now is the right time for me to take a new path and challenge myself in new ways.”
