Why this Manchester United goalscorer says Liverpool victory is “extra nice”

Lisa Naalsund scored twice as Manchester United beat Liverpool 3-1 in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

It means Marc Skinner’s side are now second in the WSL table, with Chelsea facing leaders Manchester City later in the afternoon and Arsenal not in action due to FIFA Women’s Champions Cup commitments.

And United head coach Marc Skinner was delighted for his player.

He said: “Lisa Naalsund has had to wait a while, and I’m so pleased for her because she gives everything all the time and her goals were incredible.”

All the goals came in the second half, but the statistics did show that the hosts were dominant; United had 19 shots to Liverpool’s eight, eight of them on target.

Naalsund opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, sending a sidefoot rocketing into the top of the net – but Alice Bergstrom levelled up seven minutes later after a corner was poorly defended.

But Naalsund got her second of the game a matter of seconds later, lashing home from the edge of the box, with Fridolina Rolfo sealing the victory three minutes from time.

Naalsund: her thoughts on the game

Naalsund was named player of the match, and spoke to broadcasters Sky Sports as she collected her award.

“It was a very intensive game, two teams were pressing high and going for the win,” she said after the match.

“I think the team had a great energy today and didn’t give Liverpool a lot of time so it was good from the team.”

She added: “It’s really good. It’s such a great group of people, and when we do well, it’s extra nice, so we’re happy.”
