Millie Turner and Beth Mead have both been called up to the England Women’s squad, replacing Millie Bright and Fran Kirby.

Manchester United defender Turner receives her fourth senior call up having made a positive impact with the Lionesses during their Autumn international camps.

And Arsenal striker Mead narrowly missed out on a place in Hege Riise’s initial 21-player Olympics-focused squad but now has the opportunity to impress the England coach immediately ahead of this summer’s trip to Tokyo as a GB women’s team.

The pair replace Chelsea defender Millie Bright, who has been withdrawn from the camp due to injury and will now return to her club for treatment.

Bright’s Chelsea teammate Fran Kirby also picked up a slight injury during last weekend’s Barclays FA WSL game against Bristol City.

To allow her time to recover fully from that injury, Kirby is ruled out of England’s upcoming fixture against Northern Ireland on Tuesday 23 February, which is being shown live on BBC Red Button / BBC iPlayer from 12.30pm.

As a result, Kirby has not reported to St George’s Park base, although both players will be fully involved in all team meetings conducted virtually for the duration of the camp.

“We always knew this would be a complex camp,” admitted Riise.

“But we are delighted to have a fixture against Northern Ireland to prepare ourselves for this week and I have been very impressed by the spirit and determination I have witnessed from our players in camp so far.

“Millie Turner and Beth Mead now have an excellent opportunity to impress me and my coaching team on this camp and we look forward to welcoming them here.

“Being resilient, adaptable and versatile is what we are all about and it is a privilege to be working with such a talented and ambitious group of players.”
