Leicester City LFC’s manager, Matt Cook, explains how one of the UK’s oldest women’s football clubs is launching an exciting new venture.
Leicester City Ladies established in 1966, providing girls, youth and senior football, is re-launching its football club prior to their 50th anniversary at the end of the next season.
With the new Premier League structure, Leicester City Ladies start their journey in the Midlands Division 1. The club has launched a new project in which to attack Super League entrance in its forthcoming years.
Leicester City Ladies will now play their home matches at the next best facilities outside Leicester City FC in the form of a 4,000 all-seater stadium.
Training facilities for players will be the best outside the Super League with new injury clinics, physiotherapy and sports science sections being built. There’s also good opportunities for players to build their football CV’s with qualifications and development.
Players from age 7 will be the priority in reinvesting in our products and building from a core from our high level coaching to such things as the new gym areas for senior players when we are not training.
Women’s football outside the elite divisions always struggles for finance and this is Leicester City Ladies’ chance to self-fund and having recently achieved charity status, the future is bright for the oldest women’s club. Players have the chance to play for free through utilising the sponsorship and scholarships systems in place as of now.

This is a brand new adventure for this sleeping giant of a club, although things will happen slowly and in a correct manner, we invite all ambitious footballers and coaches to come and speak to the club and view this new venture. There are many opportunities available for volunteers especially on the coaching side. Although these are voluntary roles, we look to offer the best to replace any worthwhile pocket money and make a working environment that people thrive in.
This is probably the first venture of its kind in recent times and in the women’s game, with a true football structure the plan, away from financial aims within the game. To make Leicester City Ladies a safe stable and exciting brand is the key and after 50 years LCLFC has certainly earned its right within the women’s game.
