Bonnyrigg Rose into ScottishPower National League Cup quarter-finals

ScottishPower National League Cup quarter finalists revealed, Ross County crowned Highland queens and Regional SWFL underway.

League One side Bonnyrigg Rose have joined Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Stirling University, East Fife, Inverurie Locos, Kilwinning FA, Renfrew and Dryburgh Athletic in the quarter finals of the ScottishPower National League Cup.

A first-half hat-trick by Jen Brown had the Midlothian side in control against Championship opponents Westdyke, and further goals from Rebecca Murray and Kazya Stevens sealing a 5-0 win and their place in the quarter finals. Fellow League One sides Locos and Kilwinning join them, after beating Giffnock SC and Edinburgh Caledonia respectively.

Falkirk’s Anna Murray saw red after her side levelled against Renfrew Ladies, and the visitors went on to clinch a 4-1 win with strikes from Erin Gould, Sinead Macleod and Danni Gallacher. An early penalty scored by Rachel Robbie and a second half strike from Denver Hopkins was enough to secure a victory for Dryburgh Athletic against Glasgow Women. Earlier, East Fife had beaten Forfar Farmington 5-1 at home while Stirling University ran out 3-0 winners over Armadale Thistle.

Ross County claimed the ScottishPower Highlands and Islands League title in a tense final day, beating former holders Buckie Ladies 1-0 in Dingwall. Substitute Reece Flaws struck the winner in the second half to secure the title in Ross County’s first season playing senior women’s football. Many of the players involved coming straight from winning the Under18s North League Cup Final some 24 hours earlier.

Sutherland secured second place with a 6-1 win over rivals Caithness.

The Scottish Women’s pyramid also saw regional divisions of the biggest-ever Scottish Women’s Football League get underway. With 49 teams now involved, the leagues have been expanded into five divisions, with the winners of each league entering play-offs with the side finishing second bottom of League One for three promotion places into the Barclays national leagues for next season.

Dunfermline Athletic and Alloa Athletic got off to a perfect start in the new SWFL Central, with 3-2 victories over Colts and Glasgow Women Academy respectively.

Glenrothes Strollers laid down a marker in SWFL East with a 12-1 victory over Dryburgh Athletic, while newcomers Penicuik Athletic picked up their first ever win in senior football in a 3-0 victory over East Fife Development. Edinburgh South ran out 7-3 victors over Musselburgh Windsor.

In SWFL North, Arbroath claimed a 7-0 victory over Westdyke Thistle and Grampian won 4-1 at Dyce, while in SWFL West Drumchapel edged out Gleniffer Thistle 3-2 and Bishopton claimed a 5-0 win over Harmony Row.
