Barcelona star Kika Nazareth has been included in the Portugal squad for Women’s Euro 2025, despite the fact she is still recovering from an ankle injury.
The 22-year-old suffered ligament damage in her left ankle during Barcelona’s Copa de la Reina semi-final win against Real Madrid in March.
She underwent ankle surgery on March 19th and her club said she would be out for “approximately four months”.
This appeared to rule out Portugal’s top star from appearing at this summer’s tournament in Switzerland.
However, she has defied expectations by being included in Francisco Neto’s Euro 2025 squad.
Portugal are in Group B at Euro 2025, alongside Spain, Belgium and Portugal.
Is Kika Nazareth fit enough to feature at Euro 2025?
The inclusion of Kika Nazareth in the Portugal squad for Women’s Euro 2025 shows how important she is for her country.
She has netted 10 goals in 43 appearances, including the equaliser in a 1-1 Nations League draw against England in February.
However, there are doubts over whether she will be fit enough to feature during the group stage at Euro 2025. Her inclusion in the squad has reportedly frustrated her club Barcelona.
Nazareth only returned to light training in June. However, she was included in the pre-tournament squad for this week’s goalless draw against Nigeria.
She didn’t feature in the game, but Neto believes she is far enough in her recovery to feature this summer.
The 22-year-old has one week to prove she is ready for Portugal’s Euro 2025 opener against Spain on July 3rd.
The Euro 2025 fixture schedule for Portugal then sees games against Italy on July 7th and Belgium four days later.
Are there any WSL players in the Portugal squad?
There is only one representative from the Women’s Super League (WSL) in the Portugal squad at Euro 2025.
Everton goalkeeper Ines Pereira is the only player to make it into the squad from the English top-flight.
It is a strong team including forwards Jessica and Diana Silva, Benfica midfielder Andreia Norton, and Real Sociedad’s Andreia Jacinto.
