Everton have confirmed that Danish midfielder Karen Holmgaard has suffered an ACL injury.
The 26-year-old went down early in Everton’s FA Cup fourth round tie against West Brom and the injury has been confirmed to be as bad as it looked at the time.
Karen Holmgaard suffers ACL injury
Everton knew almost immediately that Karen Holmgaard would be out for an extended period when she went down against West Brom.
The midfielder pulled up with pain etched across her face early in the FA Cup. Holmgaard sat in a heap on the floor in agony and Everton confirmed the bad news after the game.
In a club statement, the Toffees said: “Karen Holmgaard sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury during Everton’s FA Cup clash with West Bromwich Albion and will be unavailable for the foreseeable future.”

It is unlikely that Holmgaard will feature again for Everton this season considering the severity of her injury.
The Danish international has featured in 11 of the Toffees 12 WSL games so far this season and she has been a reliable player to call on for Brian Sorensen.
Holmgaard has played for Everton since 2023 and she has become a fan favourite of the club since arriving on Merseyside.
The injury to Holmgaard is an untimely one for her team, with Everton suffering through a difficult period in the new year.
Problems mounting for Everton
Losing Holmgaard is just the latest in a long string of unfortunate circumstances for Everton.
Kelly Gago’s transfer saga has been one of the most discussed in the January window.
The French striker is seeking a move back home to France and she has made her feelings very clear by handing in a transfer request.
Everton lost fellow striker Katja Snoeijs just days later. The Dutch striker suffered an ankle injury and will be out for at least six weeks.
It is likely that the Toffees get busy in the transfer market before it closes after losing three of their starters in January.
There is some good news for Everton as Sorensen’s team thrashed West Brom in the FA Cup.
The fifth round draw for the FA Cup takes place on Monday night, as Everton hope to face one of the lower ranked sides still in the competition.
