Former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez fined following sexist comments

Javier Hernandez fined after sexist comments

Javier Hernandez, a former men’s striker who represented Mexico and played for Manchester United, has been fined for sexism after bizarre comments he made about women.

The 37-year-old who plays for his hometown club Chivas in Guadalajara, was fined by the Mexican Football Federation after a series of controversial videos on social media platform TikTok.

His comments were met with backlash in Mexico and on social media.

Claudia Sheinbaum, the country’s first female president, said: “Chicharito is a very good soccer [player] but when it comes to his opinion on women… he still has a lot to learn.”

Football fans remarked that Hernandez’s comments were sexist and unacceptable on social media.

His comments also come at a time when women in the game of football are being celebrated across the crowd.

There has been tremendous success at tournaments including Women’s Euro 2025, Copa America Femenina and the Women’s African Cup of Nations.

What did Javier Hernandez say that led to his fine?

Javier Hernandez has been subject to a stream of criticism following comments he made about women on social media.

He said: “Women, you are failing. You are eradicating masculinity by making society hypersensitive.

“Embrace your feminine energy: nurturing, caring, receiving, multiplying, cleaning, maintaining the home, which is the most precious place for us men.

“Do not be afraid to be women, to allow yourselves to be led by a man who only wants to see you happy, because we do not know heaven without you. Holding yourselves responsible for your energy is also a way of loving you.”

He added: “I understand that we are afraid to speak and truly express what we feel because they are trying to eradicate masculinity, since in certain cases of the past, feminine energy was suppressed, but many of us are here wanting to love you, take care of you, respect you, and provide for you.”

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbohm responded: “I’m a mother, I’m a grandmother, I’m also a housewife. But I’m also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. Women can be whatever we want.”

Hernandez’s comments come as Joey Barton has also been told to ‘stop crying’ by England fans following his critical comments about women’s football during Euro 2025.

What has been the response to Javier Hernandez’s comments?

Javier Hernandez has been criticised by his own club Chivas following the comments which led to him being fined for sexism.

In a statement they said: “Club Deportivo Guadalajara reaffirms its commitment to equal development, gender equality, and respect for all people.

“The recent messages posted on social media represent an individual position that is unrelated to the principles and values of our institution.

“The Club has taken the appropriate actions in accordance with its internal regulations. As an institution with a deep sense of social responsibility, we firmly reject any behaviour, stance, or expression that reinforces stereotypes that limit the freedom, respect, and full development of all people, both within and outside of sports.

“We are known for promoting safe and inclusive environments, with a constant focus on equal opportunities for women and men.”

In a joint statement, the Mexican Football Federation and the country’s top men’s and women’s leagues said that the Gender and Diversity Commission has started an investigation.
They said this “seeks to prevent and punish this behaviour” and will “take more severe measures” to prevent repeat offences.
