Leicester City goalkeeper Janina Leitzig says she is confident the team can push on in the new campaign after feeling they left points on the table last season.
Moving away from a survival mentality, she believes the squad has the quality to aim higher in the table if they can find consistency and keep key players fit.
Leicester had an up-and-down season in 2024–25 but managed to stay up, finishing 10th in the WSL.
They collected 20 points from 22 matches, with a record of five wins, five draws, and 12 losses. The Foxes finished 10 points clear of Crystal Palace who were relegated.
Leitzig’s form was key to Leicester’s stability. Since joining from Bayern Munich, the German goalkeeper has become a cornerstone of the side and was rewarded with a permanent deal.
Janina Leitzig and Leicester aim higher for the 2025-26 WSL campaign
Speaking to WSL Full-Time, Janina Leitzig reflected on the ups and downs of the 2024-25 season for Leicester.
“I think we could have achieved more last season; ending up higher in the table and getting more points,” she admitted.
“We had a lot of injuries, especially early in the season and you could tell when we got players back that we started to play better. We also needed time to get used to the philosophy of the new manager.”
The German shot-stopper believes that the squad has plenty of untapped potential and is eager to see what the Foxes can accomplish if key players remain fit.
“I’m really excited for the new season because I think there’s a lot of potential in the squad. Hopefully, everyone stays healthy and then I think we can achieve much more.”
When Does the 2025–26 Season Start?
The fixtures for the 2025-26 WSL season see Leicester open away to Manchester United on Sunday, September 7th, at 12:00 BST, with the match to be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
Leitzig underlined the importance of starting well against a strong opponent.
“We have to start the season strong and there’s no better way to do that than against a top opponent. You have to be on top and have the best game to get some points out of it.”
After the trip to United, Leicester host Liverpool at the King Power Stadium on September 14th.
They then face a tough run with Chelsea away on September 21st, before returning home to meet Tottenham Hotspur on September 27th.
That challenging first month could prove decisive in shaping their season as they look to move up the table.
