Ireland Win But Wales Lose Opening U-17 Qualifiers

There were mixed results as Wales and Republic of Ireland began their UEFA U-17 Championship qualifying round mini-tournaments on Sunday. 

Wales played their opening Group 5 fixture at the Mosevej Stadion in Kolding against hosts Denmark and went down 2-0.

Olivia Møller Holdt opened the scoring midway through the first half, after Deanna Lewis had saved the initial shot.

Emma Snerle then doubled the Danes lead on 51 minutes.

France, whom Wales meet next on Wednesday afternoon, crushed Kazakhstan 12-0, Madeline Roth top-scoring with four goals.

Republic of Ireland started in Zeneca against Group 4 hosts Bosnia & Herzegovina and in a game of very few chances, emerged 1-0 winners.

Chelsea midfielder Megan Mackey headed home a cross from Isibeal Atkinson with just 3 minutes remaining.

Next up for Colin Bell’s side on Wednesday are Romania, who held the lead for virtually the whole match against Greece, before conceding 4 minutes into stoppage-time.
