We hear the latest from the camp as captain Claire Stancliffe reveals the rivalry and respect for current champions USA…
The 5-0 win over hosts Italy on Thursday definitely gave us a boost after a frustrating draw in the opener vs Poland. It gave us a chance to experiment. We were 5-0 up after 30 minutes and were given instructions to just pass the ball around and keep possession. We could of easily had a few more goals but we got the job done.
Next up was the U.S. We started off so well, we knew that we had a massive challenge ahead of us against the current world champions. The majority of their players are on university scholarships and train everyday. We don’t have that luxury with our players working full time or studying. For the first 30 minutes we kept it 0-0, before their striker pounced on a defensive mistake. Hats off to USA, they showed us incredible respect and both teams played a fair game of football.
Another goal for USA before half time made it 2-0. In the second half we never really got going but again we kept them out of our penalty box. Then two short corners which lead to long shots got them an extra two goals. Deep down, we know we could have stopped all of their goals and we will learn from mistakes.
I have a huge amount of respect for USA. They are really friendly and we get on well off the pitch. On the pitch it’s great that we can have a real test against a team that are physically fit. I always wonder how much better we could be if we’re fully funded and had the opportunity to train more. We are not that far away from their level. Their players have said we have given them the toughest game so far.
We mainly use sign language or make up signs to represent a certain tactic when we communicate on the field. For example, ‘No.1 could be a short quick free kick, No.2 a long free kick. If we all know what the tactics are before the game and we “label” them it makes communication a lot easier.
We have some players who are fluent in sign language, while some aren’t. Those who aren’t rely on lip reading. We all know everyone’s preferred method. In team talks our manager can sign slightly but our assistant coach also helps with interpreting so that every single player knows what’s being said.
Next up, on Tuesday, we have Turkey followed by Russia. If I am correct, if we win both games we will be in the final. We have every chance of getting to the final and we are all ready to get stuck in!
