FULHAM CAUSE SECOND CUP SHOCK

Although Fulham FC Foundation Ladies are only mid-table in the London & South East League with more defeats than wins, last Sunday they eliminated a second Premier League side in the SSE Women’s FA Cup. So we caught up with captain Verity Snow.

SK: How did the early scoring go with Enfield Town?

VS: We were very surprised that we scored first. But it took a deflection from the keeper and I took full advantage to take the lead.

SK: Did you feel you were on the way out at 3-1 down?

VS: Being 3-1 down to a team a league above us with 5 minutes ’till the final whistle, we had nothing to lose to give it our all for that time. We never stopped putting the tackles in, or running our socks off.

SK: Tell us about the goals that forced extra-time?

VS: So we got a corner and the wind in the second half helped us… it was going near post and we hassled to get the ball and by luck the opposition put it in the back of the net. We recovered the ball very quickly and still proceeded to fight, we then received another corner, this time the ball wasn’t going to make it. I stepped forward to head the ball back into danger and Helen Ogle volleyed it into the back of the net.

SK: Who looked the fitter and more likely to score in the added half-hour?

VS: Both teams had worked tremendously hard and it was going to be a tough 30 minutes. We had some early shots and looked like scoring but the goalie pulled off some good saves.

SK: What can you recall from the penalties?

VS: We weren’t happy about them but we had every faith in our new young goalie [Paige Hersey]. Both teams scored, then a save from our keeper, then we scored and our keeper saved again for 3-1.

SK: What do you reckon to your 2nd Round draw at home to Southern Division Lewes?

VS: We knew we would get another strong side as there are only teams above us left in, but like we have done throughout the FA Cup, we will give it our all and work hard as a team.
