KC Current celebrate a goal against Bay FC (KC Current/NWSL)

Freya Coombe, assistant coach of KC Current, has paid tribute to head coach Vlatko Andonovski and his latest milestone in the NWSL.

The Current’s 2-0 win over Bay FC at the weekend was head coach and sporting director Vlatko Andonovski’s 100th NWSL regular season victory, becoming just the second coach in the league’s 13-year history to do so.

“I know that if he sat here, he will just play it down and be very humble, so it’s great that people can speak on his behalf!” Coombe said in a press conference on Monday.

“It’s an incredible milestone. What he brings is his organisation – he’s such a good coach, the technical improvement that he’s able to show. If we look at players within the squad, individually they’re getting better as well as the improvement that we’ve seen in his short tenure in charge of the team is fantastic, and the grind that he does every day as well as the environment that he’s able to create for us as staff working for him but also for the players, it’s a fantastic environment to be in.

“A lot of people want to be a part of that environment. That’s a great testament to him, his personality, his experience, and the fact how much he looks after the people that are in his environment.

“So it’s a huge achievement, it shouldn’t be downplayed, and I’m just grateful to be part of his staff and to be working alongside him, because he has so much to offer, and I think you can see that from what the team is doing this year, it is setting new records game after game. That’s a tribute to him and what he does.”

KC Current’s record-breaking season so far

KC Current set some more records on the pitch at the weekend, picking up their ninth away win of the regular season, a league benchmark, and their 16th match win overall, equalling their club record set last season. They have now not conceded a goal for 632 minutes.

“Obviously it’s always nice when you win and the 100th win, it’s nice, but it’s something that I personally don’t think much of,” said Andonovski at the time. “Having this win being our 16th this season is what means a lot more than anything else. Hopefully we can string a couple more wins here and solidify home field advantage.”

The Kansas City Current became the first team this season to clinch a spot in the 2025 NWSL Playoffs, booking a guaranteed top-four spot, and ensuring they will host at least a quarter-final match at CPKC Stadium.
