Scotland duo Jennifer Beattie and Kim Little had been on City’s title winning team in its inaugural campaign last year but the club’s incredible run of victories finaly came to an end over 400 days since their very first.
Canberra’s Jenna McCormick headed them in front via the crossbar just after the break and although Beverly Yanez soon levelled from distance, assisted by Welsh international Jess Fishlock, Karly Roestbakken restored United’s advantage on 82 minutes to bring an end to Melbourne’s mighty achievement.
The result leaves Melbourne top on goal-differemce only from Sydney United, while Canberra move up to third and within two points of the leaders.
