Aston Villa moved up two places to ninth in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League with a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

The result put them level on points with Birmingham City, whom they visit in midweek and sees Villa five points clear of the one relegation place.

Spurs did have the better of the first half, with Kit Graham and Alanna Kennedy threatening but they found themselves behind to a spectacular strike by Mana Iwabuchi, her shot from distance flying high into the far corner of the net.

The visitors struggled to create any clear-cut chances in the second-half and they might have lost goalkeeper Aurora Mikalsen, who escaped with just a caution for bringing down Diana Silva on the edge of the penalty area.

A lengthy spell of stoppage-time allowed Spurs an opportunity to rescue a point but when the ball came the way of Cho Sho-hyun, her shot cleared the crossbar.
