Chelsea went back to the top of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League with a 2-0 midweek win away to Spurs.

Spurs keeper Becky Spencer made several saves, including a couple from Sophie Ingle and one to deny Drew Spence, while the hosts’ Rianna Dean didn’t make the best of a good position and Lucy Quinn forced Ann-Katrin Berger into a smart block at the near post.

Tottenham looked to be holding the Blues until half-time but conceded in the 41st minute, when Millie Bright’s long ball was volleyed across the six-yard box by Guro Reiten and fired home by Sam Kerr.

The ball deflected of Chelsea’s Jonna Anderson onto the Spurs bar very early in the second half but the lead was doubled on 52 minutes. Reiten again with the cross, Kerr prodding home after Spencer parried her initial header.

Emma Hayes’ side now go into the final round of fixtures on Sunday holding a two-point lead over Manchester City, with Chelsea hosting Reading and the Cityzens away to West Ham.

Player of the Month

Meanwhile, Chelsea pair Berger and Kerr are up for the Barclays FA WSL player of the month award for April, along with Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema, plus West Ham duo Hawa Cissoko and Kenza Dali.
