Chelsea set a new Barclays FA Women’s Super League record of 32 games unbeaten when going top with victory away to Aston Villa.

Emma Hayes’ side eclipsed Manchester City’s previous record of 31 set between May 2015 and May 2017, to take back the leadership from Manchester United on goal-difference.

Villa again fell behind in the opening minutes of a game, as they failed to clear a Niamh Charles cross and Sam Kerr hit the loose ball in off the underside of the crossbar.

Beth England also hit the bar but did double the lead on 34 minutes, with a powerful header from Kerr’s cross.

Guro Reiten set up two goals midway through the second half, firstly laying the ball off for Pernille harder to find the bottom corner from 20 yards, then sending in a free kick which was stabbed home by Magdalena Eriksson, making the final score 4-0.

Meanwhile, in the latest batch of Covid tests in the WSL and Championship – taken from 18 – 24 January – there was just a single positive result out of 975.
