Erin Cuthbert confident on catching Manchester City: “Six points isn’t that much”

Erin Cuthbert Chelsea Champions League Team of the Week

Despite the six point gap between Chelsea and Manchester City in the WSL, Erin Cuthbert has full confidence in her team coming back and winning the league once more.

Chelsea have won the last six WSL titles but are facing their toughest challenge yet this season.

Erin Cuthbert has faith in Chelsea

As one of the longest serving players still at Chelsea, Erin Cuthbert has more experience winning than most.

The Scottish midfielder has played over 250 games for the Blues.

In her eight years at Chelsea, Cuthbert has won seven WSL titles – becoming a league and club legend.

Chelsea have never been this far behind in the title race but the players don’t seem too concerned – especially after beating City in the League Cup this week.

“We now need to put as much pressure as we possibly can and hope that Manchester City drop points,” Cuthbert said. “We’ve seen in previous years that we’ve dropped points and let Manchester City back into it so it’s definitely possible.

“There is a lot of football to be played and I don’t think six points is that much.”

City are currently six ahead of their title rivals with ten games left to play in the campaign and they are in control of their own destiny.

Chelsea play Arsenal on Saturday in a game that could change the shape of the title race. Anything but three points will be a disappointment to Sonia Bompastor’s team who will need to win almost every match to catch up to City.

The big one comes a week after the Arsenal game, with Chelsea travelling to Manchester in a match that could return Blues to the top of the table.

Cuthbert loves competition

Despite being one of the longest-serving players in the WSL, Cuthbert still enjoys competing for her place in the Chelsea team.

“You can’t sit still because all the other teams are coming up. Other players are coming for your position,” said Cuthbert. “It matters every day in the training sessions and how you apply yourself. You’ve got competition in every team.

“We’ve got a big squad but as long as it’s healthy competition for places, then it’s going to get you places.”

The 27-year-old has featured in 11 out of 12 WSL games this season and has proved that she still holds a place at Chelsea after eight years at the club.

With two assists in her last league game, Cuthbert has no doubt earned a start against Arsenal this weekend.
