Ahead of the Lionesses’ upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Australia, SheKicks takes a look at which players are leading England Women’s all-time record appearances list.

England Women’s all-time record appearances top 10

10. Kelly Smith – 117 appearances

Starting off the top 10 is Kelly Smith who made 117 appearances for the Lionesses between 1995 and 2014.

Smith, who was seen as one of the best players in the world, played in five major tournaments and finished in the top five of the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year rankings on three occasions.

The closest active player to knocking Smith out of the top 10 is Manchester City’s Alex Greenwood. The City defender needs 13 more caps to surpass Smith’s 117 caps.

9. Steph Houghton – 121 appearances

Steph Houghton played 121 times for England between 2007 and 2021, making her debut in a 1-0 win over Scotland.

She missed the World Cup with a broken leg that year but went on to play in many major tournaments for the Lionesses.

Houghton played her last game for England one year before their Euro 2022 triumph and retired from football in 2024.

8. Gillian Coultard – 125 appearances

Gillian Coulthard is the oldest player on this list having made her 125 appearances for England between 1981 and 2000.

She scored 19 goals for England, including a brace in England’s first ever World Cup finals match against Canada in 1995.

Coulthard was also part of the England side that finished runner-up to Sweden at the first ever Women’s Euros in 1984.

7. Rachel Yankey – 129 appearances

Rachel Yankey marked her England debut with a goal in a 4-0 win over Scotland in August 1997.

She was one of England’s most famous players during her prime but was surprisingly omitted Hope Powell’s Euro 2009 squad

Yankey won her place back in Powell’s squad and led England’s all-time appearance list at the time of her retirement.

Casey Stoney made her England debut in August 2000 as a substitute against France, making 129 appearances before retiring 17 years later.

After spells in central defence and right back she went on to become England’s first choice left back.

After retiring, she had managerial spells at Manchester United and San Diego Wave and is currently the head coach of the Canadian national team.

=4. Lucy Bronze – 140 appearances

Lucy Bronze has the most caps out of any active player in the England squad.

She helped England win the European Championship at both Euro 2022 and 2025 – playing with a fractured leg during the entirety of the latter tournament.

If she plays in England’s remaining four fixtures in 2025, she will be tied for third on this list.

She continues to be a huge asset for the Lionesses, being named as England’s Player of the Year.

=4. Alex Scott – 140 appearances

Alex Scott also has 140 caps for England and could drop to fifth place if Bronze plays Brazil on Saturday.

The TV host made her debut against the Netherlands in September 2004 and played at seven major tournaments.

Scott was the second most-capped player in England’s history when she retired from international football 13 years after her debut.

Former Arsenal, Birmingham and Chelsea player Karen Carney made 144 appearances for England between 2005 and 2019.

Carney made her debut against Portugal and was an integral part of England’s Euro 2005 squad later that year.

After scoring 33 goals for the Lionesses, she retired from football after England lost their third-place playoff with Sweden at the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

2. Jill Scott – 161 appearances

Jill Scott made her England debut against the Netherlands in August 2006 and the Manchester City legend played a big part for the Lionesses over the next 16 years.

She scored a late winner to send England to the final of Euro 2009, where they were heavily beaten by Germany.

However, she finally got her hands on silverware for the Lionesses in her final of Euro 2022 and holds the second most appearances for England Women.
