Maybe it was a mistake to mix ‘promoting the game’ with England testing themselves against top opposition, suggests HANNAH ROBERTS…
While I believe that ‘let’s get coverage and promote the game’ and ‘let’s test ourselves against a great team’ are both brilliant ideas, I feel that it was a mistake to do the two on the same day writes HANNAH ROBERTS.
Not only were the players (especially the younger ones) dealing with the pressure of playing the world’s best in Germany, they also had to do it in front of 45000 people and control the nerves of playing at Wembley.
Perhaps the big Wembley game should have been played against a team that has a rivalry, but could be beaten. We all know that Canada has become well acquainted with England over recent years, as an example (although this rivalry is perhaps not known so well outside of the WoSo world).
Could you imagine England vs Scotland at Wembley? I imagine it would attract the same crowd, but it would be a winnable game for England. Some kids who didn’t know the team before may have gone away from Sunday thinking ‘England aren’t very good’ or ‘Oh, that was disappointing’, but a win in front of that kind of crowd would be invaluable (without any disrespect to Scotland).
A friendly against Germany can come at any time, but the first women’s game at Wembley can only be once.
And I fear it may have been wasted.
We want your thoughts from Sunday’s game. Please email HERE.
