England fightback to reach FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup quarter-finals

England came from 2-1 down to beat Mexico 4-2 and reach the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Group C – North Korea 3-0 Kenya, England 4-2 Mexico
Group D – Japan 2-1 Brazil, Zambia 0-2 Poland

Zara Shaw put the Young Lionesses in front but Ana Salas soon equalised, before Alexa Soto gave Mexico the lead from the spot five minutes into the second half.

Nelly Las got England back on level terms just after the hour mark, with the score then remaining at 2-2 until close to the end of the 90 minutes.

Rachel Maltby found the net in the 88th minute and 11 minutes into stoppage time, Olivia Johnson sealed the win with England’s fourth goal.

England next meet North Korea on Wednesday in a group decider, after the Koreans ended Kenya’s hopes with a 3-0 defeat in which So Ryu-gyong struck twice in the opening 12 minutes.

Poland lead Group D on goal-difference from Japan, who went above Brazil by beating them 2-1. Juju opened the scoring for Brazil but Momo Sato and Asako Furuta turned the game around. Kinga Wyrwas and Weronika Araśniewicz netted for the Poles to eliminate Zambia.
