Elisabeth Terland scored the only goal of the game as Manchester United secured their place in the Subway Women’s League Cup final.
They beat Arsenal 1-0 in poor weather conditions at Boreham Wood’s Meadow Park.
The Gunners created plenty of goalscoring chances, even in the second half when they were reduced to ten players after the sending-off of Olivia Smith.
And the Norway international was pleased to be able to contribute to the victory with her goal in first-half stoppage time – especially after her claim for a penalty for a challenge from Katie McCabe was turned down a few minutes before.
“We knew that it was going to be a tough game and maybe a [single goal was going] to decide the game,” Terland told the club’s official video channel. “The pitch is a bit scrappy today and we knew that if we pressed hard we were going to get some opportutnities. We did, so it was good.”
Elisabeth Terland: The defensive work won Manchester United the game
And she brushed off any personal plaudits in favour of praising the team’s performance.
“I haven’t been getting the ball as much as I want in the box lately. Once I do, I do my job. That’s what I’m supposed to do.
“Today what stands out for me is the way we defend – we defend the whole game. I want to highlight the team for that. It’s not easy to score a goal, but the defensive work is what won us the game. I’m proud of the group.”
It will be Manchester United’s first final in the competition, and they face defending champions Chelsea, who defeated Manchester City by a single goal in the other semi-final – but Terland is not worried about the prospect.
“It feels great,” she said. “The final – that’s cool. We’re creating history with the club.”
