Durham vs Liverpool preview

This week’s Subway League Cup clash could be a close affair considering both team’s recent form.

Durham have endured a mixed bag of results in the past month with three losses and a draw. The club did get back on track in the league last weekend however with a win against Nottingham Forest.

Their Cup journey got off to a rollercoaster start as Durham drew 1-1 with Sheffield United. With the League Cup format, a penalty shootout was then played for an extra point which Durham lost.

After picking up just one point in their first cup game Durham will be desperate for a win in Group B which is currently led by Liverpool.

The Reds have been absolutely awful in the WSL this year and they are still on no points five games into the season.

Despite their misfortunes in the league, Liverpool got off to a resounding start in the League Cup.

After beating Sunderland 5-0 in their first cup game Gareth Taylor’s side is in a prime position to win the group and advance to the quarter finals for the first time since 2023.

Liverpool are in desperate need of a confidence boost right now and Durham could be in for a long night if the WSL team comes out firing.

Durham & Liverpool team news team news

After such a dominant win against Forest in WSL2 last weekend, it is hard to imagine Adam Furness making many changes to his team.

While Durham striker Poppy Pritchard is yet to score this season, she provided two assists over the weekend and should maintain her spot in the lineup.

Liverpool will be forced into a change this week after one of their best midfielders suffered a horror injury last weekend. The Reds have confirmed that Marie Höbinger will be out for the season with an ACL injury.

Scotland international Kirsty Maclean replaced the Austrian against Manchester City and could step straight into Taylor’s team on Thursday night.

Predicted lineups

Durham: Sheppard; Briggs, Foster, Salicki, Ayre; Hepple, Toland, Lambert; Blake, Speckmaier, Pritchard.

Liverpool: Kirby; Shimizu, Bonner, Clark, Evans; Fisk; Kerr, Nagano, Maclean, Kapocs; Enderby.

Durham vs Liverpool prediction

Both of these teams are in desperate need of a win but for very different reasons. Anything but a win for Durham would see their chances at advancing to the League Cup knockouts diminish rapidly.

Liverpool on the other hand are in need of a confidence boost that feels like it will only come in cup competitions.

We are backing the WSL side to just prevail on Thursday night as they could finally turn their season around and begin a run of results.

Prediction: Durham 1-3 Liverpool
