DOUBLE DREAM COME TRUE for Karen Carney

Playing football for England at Wembley is now a dream for girls as well as boys, says Karen Carney…

The Birmingham City winger is preparing to win her 100th cap in Sunday’s historic meeting with Germany at the national stadium writes TONY LEIGHTON.

In what will be the first appearance of the women’s team at the new Wembley, Carney will line-up in front of a 55,000 crowd – the biggest in the history of the women’s side – as the Three Lionesses take on the European champions.

“It’s going to be an amazing day,” said Carney, “absolutely massive for the England team and a huge a stepping stone for women’s football in this country.

“We’ll be aiming to put on a good show against a great team and hopefully make the fans want to come back and watch more women’s games.”

Carney will be one of eight players in the England squad from the Team GB line-up that memorably beat Brazil 1-0 at Wembley in the 2012 London Olympics.

“There was a fantastic atmosphere that night at Wembley,” recalled the former Arsenal and Chicago Red Stars player. “I stood on the pitch next to Kelly Smith in the pre-match ceremony and said to her, ‘this is what dreams are made of.’
