Daphne van Domselaar: Arsenal still have so much potential

Arsenal goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar believes that there is still a lot more that her club has to offer after winning the women’s Champions League last season.

The Gunners have been disappointing this season but their number one isn’t giving up on the team just yet.

Arsenal still have potential

After winning the Champions League last season, this year has started off to a disappointing note for Arsenal.

The Gunners have lacked conviction in the WSL and as a result they trail league leaders Manchester City by eight points.

Despite a lacklustre beginning to the campaign, Daphne van Domselaar still believes that her club has plenty of potential.

“Of course, we go into every season wanting to win more trophies and achieve as much as we can as a team. For me personally, I want to stay fit and contribute however I can,” she said.

“We’ve got so much potential and so many good players, so it’s how we get the best out of each other and stay on the level we reached last season in the Champions League. We’re pushing and working hard every single day.”

After a narrow win against Twente in the week Arsenal did manage to qualify for the knockouts with one game to spare.

The Gunners definitely still remain one of the favourites to retain their European title, but other teams in the competition such as Barcelona and Lyon still look a lot more dangerous.

Of course Arsenal upset Barca in the final last year and it would be no surprise to see them do the same again at the end of this season.

What next for Daphne van Domselaar?

Daphne van Domselaar herself is enjoying a good season with Arsenal, conceding only eight goals in nine WSL appearances so far.

The Arsenal number one has high expectations for her club as after just one season in North London they were crowned European champions.

Van Domselaar was nominated for the first-ever Yashin Award this year but missed out to Hannah Hampton.

Renee Slegers’ team have a busy week coming up before the winter break. In the next 10 days the Gunners play Everton in the WSL, Crystal Palace in the League Cup and Oud-Heverlee Leuven in the Champions League to close out 2025.

Should they win all three games Arsenal would move into the new year with some much needed momentum as they chase down the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea in the WSL.
