Glentoran leapfrogged fierce Belfast rivals Linfield to the top of the Danske Bank Women’s Premiership with a 1-0 victory, while Glens’ Demi Vance won the Player of the Month award.
Alison McMaster’s first half strike was the difference between the two sides in South Belfast – she volleyed home Victoria Carleton’s delivery.
It is the first league defeat of the season for current champions Linfield and they have now slipped behind the Glens at the top due to the East Belfast side’s 10-goal superior goal difference.
In a keenly contested battle, Kirsty McGuinness went close with a free kick for the hosts, while Vance was denied by two superb Ashley Hutton blocks and Rachel Rogan was thwarted by Lauren Perry in the home goal.
On the award, a delighted Vance said: “It’s a fantastic honour to win this award. I’d like to thank the Football Writers’ for their support.
“June was great for us. We won the League Cup and we kept the pressure on Linfield at the top of the league. It’s nice to win this award after my teammate Rachel Rogan won it in May. It’s great for the club to win the first two NIFWA awards.”
Derry City recorded their first league victory of the season as they edged out Comber Rec.
Kate Patton and captain Shannon Dunne were on target for the Candystripes with a Debbie Ferguson effort for the visitors sandwiched in-between.
Derry have now pulled three points clear of Comber at the foot of the table, with Ferguson’s strike the first league goal of the season for Winky Kerr’s side.
