Sunderland went top of their FA Women’s Continental League Cup group, Manchester City made it back-to-back wins.
Group A – Blackburn Rovers 1-2 Sunderland
Group B – Manchester City 3-0 Durham
Sunderland have taken five points from two away games, their 2-1 win at Blackburn coming after recently taking a shoot-out bonus at Sheffield United.
Rovers’ Annabel Blanchard had been the closest to scoring when striking the post, until the visitors netted twice in an eight-minute spell before the break
A Charlotte Potts free kick was put in the back of the net by Grace McCatty and then Holly Manders scored the second on the turn.
The Black Cats’ Eve Blakey and Emily Scarr saw efforts blocked on the line by Alex Brooks and Jade Richards, before Farah Crompton pulled a goal back after a one-two with Saffron Jordan on 78 minutes.
Manchester City remained Group B leaders after dismissing Durham 3-0 and making it two wins from as many games, previously defeating Everton 5-1.
Filippa Angeldahl opened the scoring inside 20 minutes from a Janine Beckie pull back but it was not until late on that City secured the points, despite having 20 shots to Durham’s none, as Beckie was denied by the bar and a clearance off the line, while Angeldahl hit the post
Caroline Weir came off the bench for her 100th appearance and celebrated with a drive from the edge of the box that went in off the bar.
Janine Beckie made it two goals in the dying minutes as she took advantage of a defensive mix-up to drill home.
