A Dutch double saw Arsenal beat FA Women’s Continental League Cup holders Manchester City, Maren Mjelde’s goal sent Chelsea through at Manchester United.

Arsenal’s Manuela Zinsberger had been forced into an early double save to deny Lauren Hemp and Ellen White before Vivianne Miedema punished Gemma Bonner’s error to open the scoring.

City again played a part in conceding again just before the break, Miedema setting up Danielle van de Donk whose shot slipped through Ellie  Roebuck’s hands.

When Leonie Maier fouled Hemp in the box, Zinsberger turned White’s penalty out for a corner but Bonner pulled a goal back from the flag-kick.

Chances were few in a tight tie at Leigh Sports Village but a header from Chelsea’s Millie Bright saw Mary Earps make a superb save.

United’s Lizzie Arnot later had a header on target but it was cleared by Magdalena Eriksson.

The only goal arrived with 18 minutes left, as Erin Cuthbert found Mjelde on the edge of the box who fired high into the far corner.

The Reds might have had a swift equaliser but Lauren James shot over the bar when well placed.
