Newly crowned FA Women’s Super League 1 champions Manchester City are fully focused in their quest to win a second trophy in a week, skipper Steph Houghton has said ahead of her side’s Continental Cup final clash with Birmingham City today.
The Citizens toasted their title triumph a week ago but Houghton said that minds had been focussed on their showpiece Conti Cup final clash with David Parker’s Blues at the Academy Stadium almost straight away. Although they did let the feeling sink in a little bit on Sunday evening.Speaking at an exclusive She Kicks interview session at the prestigious Soccerex global football conference in Manchester this week, the City and England captain revealed that manager Cushing urged his players not to rest on their laurels after they were crowned champions.
“That was the case [against Chelsea]; we could have sat in for a draw and relied on the point that we needed to win the league, but in this team it’s all about winning.
Today’s visitors Birmingham City will have a say in whether the Citizens finish the season as WSL 1 ‘Invincibles’ – the two go head-to-head in Manchester City’s last remaining league fixture at the end of October.
Yet with a league and cup double up for grabs and a stellar squad that includes Scotland hot-shot Jane Ross and England favourites Jill Scott and Lucy Bronze, Blues are unlikely to get an easy afternoon.
“We knew when the [venue for the] final was announced that we wanted to make sure that we were playing in our home stadium. It just seems a bit surreal,” she said.
The Continental Tyres Cup final kicks-off on Sunday 2 October at 3pm at the Academy Stadium in Manchester.
