Clash of the titans – Susan Gutteridge

England stars Jill Scott, Steph Houghton, Carly Telford, Lucy Bronze and Jordan Nobbs return to Sunderland next week when old tackle new for the, ‘Clash of the Titans,’ charity match in aid of the Blood Foundation.

The five former Sunderland players, together with Jen O’Neill (Editor of She Kicks), Julie Twaddle (SAFC Ladies Strength and Conditioning Coach) and Mel Reay (Assistant First Team Manager), will be part of the ‘Old Squad’ and join over 20 players, who have played under manager Mick Mulhern over the years. Captain Stephanie Bannon will lead the current team.

The event is being held in honour of three-year-old Finlay Kennedy. The youngster, of Penshaw, has an undiagnosed immune system condition, and has to have blood infusions every week to maintain his health.

“The reason for the match,” said Julie Twaddle. “Is to raise money for the Blood Foundation, and to help my good friend and boss’s son.”

“All the girls were really keen to help out and it will be nice to get all the players back together. There’s been a good bit of banter back and forth between them about it and whatever we can raise will be great.”

“We’ll give everyone a chance to play, even Mick (in a wig)” said Julie.

The game will take place on Sunday 24th November but the venue is now Durham City FC, with an 11am kick-off.

Admission to the game is £3 adults and £1 for concessions (pay at the gate).

There will also be a raffle with a signed England Women’s shirt donated by Jill Scott, boots by Steph Houghton and gloves by goalkeeper Carly Telford, plus many other great prizes.

“It’s a great cause and the day should be a lot of fun. We’d love as many people as possible to come along,” added Julie.
