Chelsea took a 3-0 lead from their UEFA Women’s Champions League Quarter-Final 1st Leg tie against Ajax, played in front of around 35,000 at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
Romée Leuchter hit for the post for Ajax early on but Chelsea had the lead inside 20 minutes, Lauren James initially given offside after rounding the keeper to score but a VAR check said otherwise.
Guro Reiten had the ball in the net late in the first half but this time a VAR check went against Chelsea, with Sjoeke Nüsken given offside.
However, Emma Hayes’ side did swiftly get their second goal as Nüsken netted from Reiten’s cross.
Regina van Eik got down to make two saves in a matter of moments in the last quarter of the match, tested by Erin Cuthbert and a deflected effort from James.
Cuthbert volleyed over from close range but the third goal did come in the last ten minutes, Catarina Macario’s cross met by a strong header from Nüsken for her second of the night.
The second leg is at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday 27 March, 8pm kick off and live on TNT Sports 1 and DAZN.
Tuesday’s other tie saw Lyon come from behind to win 2-1 at Benfica. Andreia Faria scored just before the break, Delphine Cascarino and Sara Däbritz scoring to turn the game round in the last half hour.
