What it means to play for Chelsea, according to Sonia Bompastor

Head coach Sonia Bompastor says that one of her tasks is to ensure players understand the pressure and privilege of playing for Chelsea.

They beat West Ham United 5-0 on Sunday as they resumed their quest to close the six-point gap on Manchester City at the top of the Barclays Women’s Super League.

And afterwards Bompastor hinted that the Blues remain confident that they can defend the domestic treble they won last season.

“We are constantly working to make sure players understand the club they are at,” Bompastor said, quoted by the club website. “Most of them have a lot of experience, and they know that when you play for Chelsea, you want to compete in all four competitions and you want to win titles.

“It’s a case of reinforcing this messaging around that, but I don’t have to say a lot; our daily behaviour is all about this.

“We arrive in the building every day to make sure we win titles, and we want to ensure Chelsea goes as far as possible in every competition. The club has been doing that for many years now, and we want to be sure we stay in that position.”

Sonia Bompastor: Chelsea need to win games

However, she acknowledged that chasing a league leader is very different to being the pace-setters, as her team were last season.

“It was really important to come into the second part of the season with the right mindset. We are in a different place from last season, when we were on top. We are now chasing Man City.

“The club has been in this situation before, and for me as a manager, I’m comfortable with being in that position, even if I wish we could be at the top. We know now we have 10 games left. The only thing we can control is to give our best in each of the next 10 games. We’ll fight until the end, and we’ll see what happens.

“I think if you reflect on the first part of the season, the only games we couldn’t win were because we couldn’t score goals, but we created a lot of opportunities in those games. It’s really important to be efficient at the highest level. We can speak a lot about the performances, but the most important thing when you are at Chelsea is to win the games.”
