Chelsea consider move for Trinity Rodman
As reported by Sky Sports, Chelsea are monitoring the status of Trinity Rodman, amid uncertainty over her future at NWSL side Washington Spirit.
Both the Spirit and the NWSL are hopeful of keeping Rodman, who is on an expiring contract.
However, Rodman’s value is higher than what the salary cap currently allows. The salary cap stood at $3.5 million (£2.6m) for the 2025 NWSL season.
It was reported that Rodman may look outside the United States after the NWSL rejected Washington’s contract offer for her last month.
The Washington Spirit contract offer for Rodman reportedly averaged more than $1m per year (£750,000) over four years. The NWSL felt the contract’s structure violated the spirit of league rules.

The High Impact Player rule, described by some as the ‘Trinity Rodman rule’, was then introduced by the NWSL.
This will allow NWSL clubs to exceed the league’s salary cap by up to $1 million (£741,600) for ‘high-impact’ players.
However, the new rule does not come into force until July.
Sky Sports report that Chelsea have money for Rodman and could make a move if she decides to leave the United States.
Rodman’s career to date
Rodman could join fellow USWNT teammates Naomi Girma and Alyssa Thompson at Stamford Bridge.
The 23-year-old, daughter of former NBA star Dennis, is regarded as one of the most exciting players in the NWSL.
She became the youngest player to be drafted in NWSL history at the age of 18, when she was selected second overall by the Washington Spirit in 2021.
In her five seasons with the Spirit, she has scored 36 goals in 120 appearances. She won the NWSL Championship during her first season, but the Spirit lost in the final against Gotham FC in 2025.
Rodman has also enjoyed success with the USWNT, winning a gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
What’s next for Chelsea?
On the pitch, Chelsea will hope to qualify for the League Cup final when they face WSL league leaders Manchester City on Wednesday night.
It is a big week for the Blues, who also face Arsenal in the WSL this weekend.
