Chelsea needed a last minute penalty to win their Continental Tyres Cup tie away to Bristol City, after the hosts had levelled late on.
Saturday 4th November
FA WSL CONTINENTAL TYRES CUP
GROUP 2 SOUTH
Bristol City 1-2 Chelsea (Att: 400)
Despite having lost 6-0 at Chelsea in the league, the Vixens were within 5 minutes of holding Emma Hayes’ side to what would have been a very creditable draw.
Goalkeeper Caitlin Leach kept the Blues at bay during the first half, turning behind Drew Spence’s powerful effort and denying Maren Mjelde twice, first from a header and then from a free-kick.
However, just a minute after the restart and Eniola Aluko turned to get through on goal and finish clinically.
Both teams then went very close, with Spence striking the outside of the post and Lauren Hemp also hitting the woodwork.
Becky Spencer was quick off her line to smother a chance for City’s Jess Woolley and Millie Turner put a free header over the Chelsea bar.
From a free-kick by Danique Kerkdijk, Turner scored at the second attempt after Spencer’s save, only for Karen Carney to win and convert a 90th-minute penalty.
