Celtic Academy defeated Hibernian U-23s with a late penalty in the Scottish League Division 1 Cup final at Ainslie Park last night, having earlier been denied by the crossbar on three occasions.

In the goalless first-half Hibs’ goalkeeper Alicia Yates recovered well to save from Kathleen McGovern after a Darcy Molley through ball and at the other end, Nicole Rutherford set up Kirsty Morrison whose powerful effort was kept out by Lisa Kerr.

Moments after the restart, Rutherford fired straight at Kerr and then Celtic might have thought their luck was out as they hit the woodwork three times in a five-minute spell.

Shannon Nagle headed against the bar from Cara Henderson’s corner, with Yates then tipping a Megan Wands cross and a McGovern free-kick onto the goal frame.

Nagle headed clear to thwart Rutherford but with 8 minutes left the ball was judged to have struck the hand of Nicola Jamieson in the box and McGovern slotted it past Yates.
